Recent Bake: Sourdough Cinnamon Rolls
I've been relying on the Clever Carrot's sourdough recipes since baking my first sourdough loaf. Her recipes are incredibly detailed, replete with tips/various asides to assist the process, and everything I've made has been delicious.
My go-to recipes include the "Light Whole Wheat Sourdough Bread" and the "Artisan Sourdough Bread Recipe With all Purpose Flour." Those recipes have come out great every time.
A recipe of hers that's been on my mind to try is her recipe for "Soft Sourdough Cinnamon Rolls." I'd been intrigued by the challenge of leveling up my baking, but I wasn't sure if me and Z needed 8 cinnamon rolls all to ourselves. I eventually threw caution to the wind--and was feeling rather uninspired by the pervasive dark and damp that is late winter in NYC--so I decided to finally tackle the cinnamon rolls. Despite the cooking projects we complete in our tiny apartment, we don't have what other amateur cooks may consider to be "essentials." We don't own a rolling pin, a stand mixer, or a mixer with a dough attachment. When the recipe called for grabbing your stand mixer and beating the newly formed dough with the dough attachment for 8 minutes, I did that by hand. I simply floured a corner of our countertop, set a timer, and set to stretching and folding the dough for 8 minutes. It was quite nice once I got into the groove of it. I imagined myself somewhere in a remote French village, perhaps wearing a long skirt with my hair pulled into a bun under a silk headscarf, kneading dough by hand.
There will come a day when I will have the space (which is the primary limitation) to own these kitchen appliances. For now, I am grateful for the skills I've gained when I haven't had everything at my disposal. I've been forced to improvise and seek alternatives. It's made me a better cook by far.
Here are some pictures of the process!
